The National Council for Scientific Research-Lebanon (CNRS-L) is the highest national public institution in charge of research in Lebanon, supporting policy, programmes and projects with a direct impact on the productive sectors, the environment, public health and socio-economic development in accordance with its set national research priorities.
Established in 1962, CNRS-L formulates national science and technology policy and advises the government, whilst also securing the planning, implementation and promotion of these policies through its national research programmes and activities and in partnership with other academic, research and development institutions in the country and through regional and international collaborations.
In parallel, CNRS-L also conducts research through its own specialized centers (The National Center for Marine Sciences, The National Center for Geophysics, The National Center for Remote Sensing and the Lebanese Atomic Energy Commission) and supports research projects having an impact on the socio-economic development of the country.
LAEC / CNRS-L
The Lebanese Atomic Energy Commission – LAEC was established by the CNRS-L in 1996 with the support of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to promote the peaceful use of Atomic Energy, to establish the necessary Radiation Protection Infrastructure in the country and to spread the culture of safety and security of radiation sources. This mandate is implemented through a comprehensive legal framework for regulatory system aiming at the protection of the general public, facilities’ workers, and the environment against ionizing radiation.
In parallel, LAEC as a research institute hosts more than 15 analytical laboratories, among them, few are based on nuclear analytical techniques. Research projects are oriented to applied research covering four main programs/axes: valorization of cultural heritage; forensic science and fraud repression; food safety, environment and public health; and materials sciences.
LAEC maintains a close collaboration with relevant ministries, public institutions, research centers and universities (national & international), whilst also hosting Master and PhD students working to achieve their respective research studies in priority areas of LAEC’s activities.
A researcher from LAEC is assigned as the focal point for the Mediterranean Innovation Partnership – MIP.
